Two local recreation centers recently discovered they may have mercury in their floors. After hiring an environmental contractor to test for mercury vapors hidden in rubberized flooring dating back to the early 1970s, elevated levels of mercury vapors were discovered at two locations. Both recreation centers had to close their gyms while Columbus, Ohio flooring contractors isolated and removed the hazardous material. The city will now have to spend more than a half million dollars for new floor installation in the Columbus gyms. In the meantime the rest of the centers’ facilities are open and the city says they pose no health risks.
